Fishing at The Old Mill

The Old Mill Fishery consists of four weirs and the main river. On the top river you can expect Roach, Bream Tench, Perch and Carp. In the weirs the most sought after are Barbell and Chub. Generally most areas are fishable all of the time, and if the weirs and river are not enough to delight any fisherman, there is also a pond where carp of up to 30lbs have been caught.

Anglers come to The Old Mill from far and wide, we even had a young lad from Germany to catch a Barbell, and he has returned several times and caught in double figures. We often welcome a very friendly group of partially disabled and head injury guests, who, with their carers catch fish and have a picnic lunch. Many fishing notaries have fished here including, John Wilson who filmed an episode of Go Fishing. Andy Little and Ray Walton to name but a few and of course Bernard Venebles at the outset. In 2001 Michael Heseltine opened a new Salmon ladder next to our newly renovated sluice gates. Renowned local fisherman, MP for Reading, Martin Slater held his wedding at The Old Mill, occasionally interrupting his reception to fish!
